I recently had the opportunity to speak with Marion Waxman, co-founder of A Hamptons Happening, one of the most highly anticipated events on the season’s social calendar.  What impressed me right away was her fierce dedication to the cause of raising money to fund the life-saving research that the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF) has been doing since 1976.  This isn’t about the pomp and circumstance, this is about a family’s mission to defeat the disease.

Marion explained to me that the foundation began when a friend’s child was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma.  They began to research less toxic treatments for cancer, based on correcting the cancer-causing gene function associated with it.  Founded by her husband, Samuel Waxman, M.D., Distinguished Service Professor and Professor of Medicine,
Division of Hematology/Oncology, Department of Medicine,
Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, SWCRF has invested roughly $90 million dollars in cancer research.  They operate as an “Institute Without Walls” funding a network of 60 research laboratories throughout North America, Asia and Europe.  One of the most amazing facts Marion relayed to me was that through their research, they have reduced the fatality rate of a certain type of Leukemia, known as APL, from 100% to only 5%, saving countless lives.

I hope you with join me in supporting SWCRF at A Hamptons Happening 13th annual event.  Enjoy food from the finest restaurants in NYC and the Hamptons, including David Burke, Eataly, Seafood Shop, The Golden Pear, and Magnolia Bakery (amongst many others).  Imbibe in spirits from Moët, Montauk Brewery and Tito’s.  And dance the night away to Rufus Wainwright and Sophie Beem, (a Beyoncé protégé), amid a silent auction.  ALL of the nights proceeds go to the SWCRF.

The mission of the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF) is to eradicate cancer by funding cutting-edge research that identifies and corrects abnormal gene function that causes cancer. This research is the basis for developing minimally toxic treatments for patients, which is particularly crucial for children and seniors battling cancer.
