This week for ‘Never Miss a Monday,’ I talked to Joe Ferraro, founding trainer at RUMBLE, a New York City based gym offering boxing-inspired group classes, and so much more. The workout is a mix of HIIT, strength training, metabolic conditioning (METCON) and boxing cardio done to a killer playlist. With the mass exodus to the city looming, you’re going to want to sign up now. They promise you’ll leave with swagger, and they definitely deliver.
How did you get your start? What made you want to start boxing?
I got my start personal training friends and family before moving to Los Angeles and working at a boxing gym. I started boxing many years ago with my dad at his friends gym for fun. I was obsessed with the Rocky movies as a kid, so that definitely played a part in my decision. What’s cool is that Sylvester Stallone is actually an investor at RUMBLE!
What differentiates RUMBLE for you?
First off, the formatting of the class with the addition of strength training. Boxers have lean sculpted physiques due in large part to their training regiments combining both disciplines. So, RUMBLE is your one stop shop utilizing the strength training and the sweet science of boxing. Secondly our water bags. These bags are super fun to punch and also much easier on the joints. As of right now we are the only group fitness studio utilizing the water bags. Thirdly, the energy in a RUMBLE class is like no other! Our state of the art sound system, lights, and rockstar instructors help guide you through a super intense but fun workout!
Always challenged, never judged-RUMBLE Anthem
What’s the training like?
The training is broken down into 10, 3 minute rounds with a 5 minute warmup at the beginning. You’ll spend 5 rounds on the bag building combinations, and working power & speed punches. On the floor you’ll spend 5 minutes full body strength training with weights.
Where are you from?
I am a New Yorker through and through. Born and raised in Smithtown on Long Island. I am “cento percento Italiano “, or 100% italian. However you want to say it.
What’s your mantra? What gets you out of bed in the morning?
Cut D’Amato said “How you fight is how you live your life.” I wake up everyday and don’t expect handouts. I wake up knowing that I’m going to spend that day fighting for what I want and who I want to be.
Do you have tips for staying motivated? Are there days you don’t want to work out?
There are plenty of days when I don’t feel like working out, but if you’re not working you’re not progressing. I know the things I want in life won’t fall into my lap. A healthy lifestyle keeps my head clear and keeps me sharp.
What’s your goal when you’re teaching?
My main goal is to give our clients an experience unlike any other fitness studio they’ve ever been to. This is done through building a killer workout, teaching them a new skill, and the combination of music and lights. When that beat drops, the lights go off, and you’re free styling on that bag, all is right in the world.
What do you do for a workout, outside of boxing?
I’m super active and love to play sports such as basketball, and lacrosse. I also love to go climbing at Brooklyn Boulders. That’s an amazing workout.
What do you do when you’re not teaching?
When I’m not teaching, I’m usually training with brother Vince or my buddy Noah (co-owner of RUMBLE). We are all super passionate about the sport of boxing, and love spending our time in the gym.
Any nutrition tips for us?
If there is one health tip I give for woman it would be to STOP COUNTING CALORIES. If you are eating high quality food, especially foods with good fat (such as avocados), the calories are not of concern. Replacing those processed carbs in your diet with foods rich in fiber, protein, and fat are more filling! Eat a good balance of all these foods, have a good exercise regimen, and your body will do the rest!
What’s the perfect cheat day?
Perfect cheat day would have to start at the deli with a huge egg sandwich with tons of bacon and cheese. Then heading to the beach with friends, and of course finishing the day off with a good slice of pizza!
Who are you listening to right now?
Wins and Losses by Meek Mill. It’s gritty and raw. The story of a comeback. It gets me super pumped in the gym.
Any favorite Hamptons spots?
I spend a lot of time in Montauk with family friends. I’m simple, so I’m always hanging on the beach or fishing on the boat. I’m a seafood connoisseur, so its awesome to catch fresh fish to eat daily. I also love to eat at Duryea’s, because lobster just may be my favorite. The beach at Gurney’s is also a super fun place to chill during the day. Ending the night with dinner at Scarpetta Beach.
RUMBLE has two locations in Flatiron/Chelsea and NOHO.
