Beach Hair, Don’t Care

This week I interviewed celebrity hairstylist Juan Carlos Maciques, who has worked with Jennifer Lopez, Chrissy Teigen, Bebe Rexha, and Pryanka Chopra, to name a few.  He currently works at Oscar Blandi on Madison Avenue.  I asked what we need to know to perfect our summer hair.  Read on to see what he had to say.

Summer is all about embracing a carefree approach to life and the hair reflects this. Effortless is the key to your summer hair look. This translates to allowing your natural texture to come through.  Just arm yourself with the right products to make it work. This also means hair is loose and clean. Adding a natural wave to enhance movement as it billows in the summer breeze can add to the effortless feeling.

By contrast, but also true of summer hair, is a trend that has continued for the past few seasons.  Half wet/half dry or gelled down completely is a sleek and chic way of getting it out of your way. I think this look is best left to a more confident fashion girl.

Also a convenient summer look but equally young and sophisticated is the low pony. Sometimes dry or gelled to the fastener and then set free. The easiest trend to create this season is a center part, smoothed down and tucked behind the ear.  Summer hair wouldn’t be complete without accessories, and there was an array of options on the runways. Visors at Tommy, headbands at Miu Miu, and of course, a plastic boater at Chanel. Point being, a hat or some incarnation thereof is a summer hair staple.

Insider tip:  If you’re very lucky, you may just be able to get Juan Carlos to make a house call.  (though I’m a little spoiled, since I’ve been seeing him for 20 years, and count him amongst my closest friends).
